Heading for the north to Kostomuksha

April 28 2014 , Written by Le BLOG d'Around The Rock Published on #Travel Stories, #Russia

It takes about one hour to leave Saint-Petersburg. The road to Mourmansk crosses the forest and is very good.

At about 7pm, we are at the level of Ladoga lake, the 2nd largest lake of Europe. We decide to leave the main road to find a nice place to bivouac.

After about 40 km on a bad secondary road, we take a forest way close to the lake and arrive on the big beaches of the Ladoga lake.

The place is deserted and ideal for a campfire before sleeping at nightfall (at about 11 pm).

The day after, we wake up under a beautiful weather and enjoy the good view of the lake.

We decide to take secondary road to go to the reserve, which is about 550 km north of the lake.

The first 20 km are praticable, but quickly, we arrive on bad tracks, which makes our advance very difficult for us and mainly for the car. As a result, we did 280 km in 7 hours…

We find a bivouac in forest where we light a fire to warm ourselves, because the temperature falls down very quickly to 5°C in the evening and there are still some snow on the ground.

After a good night, we continues the ordeal on this long track. Even if taking this trac kwas the wrong decision, we will remind only the positive side, that is the beautiful landscapes and the feeling to be alone in the middle of nowhere.

We are happy, because the last 150km of this road become tared. Louri who works for the reserve, takes us to the place where we’re going to stay two months.
